Becoming a Forklift Technician

A forklift technician role often offers you a 1st shift schedule and variety in your work day. APPLY TODAY

Most people in the community haven’t heard that Toyota builds forklifts. The manufacturer produced its first forklift in 1956 and has been the #1 selling forklift in the United States since 2002. Even with its strong reputation in the industry, Toyota forklift dealers continue to struggle with finding an abundance of forklift technicians.

Required Mechanical Experience

“I’ve never worked on a forklift”. When ProLift’s Corporate Recruiter, Holly Duddy, is at a job fair, she often hears this statement from attendees. “Most technicians have experience with automotive or diesels,” says Holly. “In many aspects forklift repair applies the same knowledge. Entering the material handling industry allows job seekers to expand their skills.”

Forklifts share several major components with automobiles, including the engine, transmission and brakes. However, forklift repair introduces technicians to hydraulics. Holly stresses to every individual that “increasing your job knowledge makes you more valuable to an employer. At ProLift, we provide forklift technical training to everyone regardless of their years in the industry. We want our forklift technicians to be prepared to repair all makes and models of forklifts.”

Work-Life Balance

Another advantage for forklift technicians is the strong work-life balance, especially compared to the evening or weekend hours involved with automotive. Forklift repairs most often happen during first-shift, which gets technicians home to their families and other obligations for the evening. “It’s rare for the customer to need us beyond first-shift hours, unless it is a big operation or an emergency,” states Holly.

While work-life balance is a top benefit, becoming a forklift technician for ProLift also includes incentives such as uniforms, a steel-toe boot stipend and competitive wages.
